- Volunteers Respond To Multi-Family Fire
Chapter DAT volunteers responded Thursday evening to a fire that broke out in an apartment building on Central Avenue to assist the residents that were displaced by the fire and provide canteen support to the firefighters and emergency workers.

In total, 8 people – 4 families – were affected by the fire, leaving them without a place to live. The Red Cross has provided shelter, food, clothing and emotional support.

According to Jason Gibson, Disaster Action Team Captain for the Hiwassee Chapter American Red Cross, “We had two tasks at hand, provide the families with the support they need to deal with such a devastating event, and support the firefighters who are working to keep the fire under control.”

On average, the local Red Cross responds to 6 home fires a month. “Helping families during their time of need is why I’ve been volunteering for the Red Cross for over 6 years.” said Sandi Loftis, from the Red Cross. “These families are victims of this tragedy and we are here to help them with their recovery.”

The Hiwassee Chapter of the American Red Cross has helped people mobilize to help their neighbors since 1917. Last year, local chapter volunteers provided emergency assistance and hope to more than 80 local families when they lost their home due to fire.
